Puri: A day after the explosion of an LPG cylinder in the pantry car of a special Army train here, the Government Railway Police (GRP) Thursday registered a case in this connection and detained a jawan for investigation into the mishap.
The GRP registered the case under Sections 285, 337 and 436 of the IPC after going through a report by Railway Protection Force (RPF) sub-inspector PK Raul.
Preliminary investigation found that a 5-kg LPG cylinder went off due to gas leak in the pantry car around 5pm Wednesday. “The expiry dates of all the four fire extinguishers in the pantry car lapsed at least a year ago. Besides, the pipes connecting LPG cylinders with stoves were found to be of poor quality,” said a GRP official.
The GRP, meanwhile, allowed the train to begin its journey for Chilika. The railway police detained Army personnel Naik Bishwanath Singh for interrogation in connection with the explosion. A team led by railway superintendent of police Banabihari Sahu and GRP deputy superintendent of police Arun Sahu interrogated Singh, Naik Satyander Singh and Naik Uday in connection with the mishap. “Naik Bishwanath Singh, in-charge of the pantry car, had gone to a local market during the explosion. He had fled to Bhubaneswar after knowing about the mishap,” said a GRP source.
