Baliguda: Life saving medicines worth lakhs of rupees were found dumped beside the staff quarters of Sudra primary health centre (PHC) under Baliguda sub-division in Kandhamal district Saturday.
The incident sparked resentment in the area as the medicines were in expired condition. The remaining stocks were found to be physicians’ samples with the warning of ‘not for sale’ written on their labels.
Locals flayed the dumping of medicines when poor people do not get them. Even as doctors and medical authorities are provided with free medicines by the government to provide them to the poor, they recommend patients to private clinics and nursing homes and get fat commissions. Later, they dumped the medicines, locals complained.
When contacted, PHC pharmacist Prabhat Chandra Das said he was newly appointed and was unaware of the incident adding that an NGO was running the PHC.
Moreover, Baliguda sub-divisional hospital superintendent Uma Shankar Mishra said he was unaware of the incident. “We will launch a probe and take necessary action against those found guilty,” he added. PNN
