Bhubaneswar: Two Dalit girls, who were allegedly assaulted by the cops at Nayapalli police station May 6 this year, Monday met the Director General of Police (DGP), RP Sharma, at his camp office here and demanded immediate action against the errant officers.
The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) had intervened in the matter May 25 and ordered action against the cops. Rights activist Pradeepta Kumar Nayak, one of the petitioners in the matter, accompanied the siblings when the latter met the DGP.
The OHRC had expressed its displeasure over the fact that despite finding the officers responsible for the assault on the sisters, the police commissioner has not taken any action against the errant cops. The rights panel had directed the Home department to initiate criminal proceedings against the police officers within four weeks.
Sharma went through the enquiry report submitted to the OHRC by the Commissioner of Police, YB Khurania. He asked the commissioner to put up the file Tuesday before him. He assured the sisters duo of action against the officers.
Notably, the Nayaplli IIC including two lady sub-inspectors picked two sisters from their home at Nuasahi in Jayadev Vihar in connection with a dispute over civil matter May 6. They were allegedly severely beaten up by the accused officers while in custody. Police also forwarded them to court after registering a case against them.
