Bhubaneswar: New state governor and Chancellor of state universities Satya Pal Mallik Tuesday stressed on the need to bring about reforms in the state’s higher education sector.
Mallik was speaking at the Vice-Chancellors (VCs) conference, his first after assuming office.
VCs of as many as 17 state-run universities in the state attended the conference along with four ministers at Raj Bhawan here.
The Chancellor asked to ensure more transparency in university administration and quality education while asserting that “students are the real assets of our country.”
As many as 10 key topics pertaining to higher education – quality education, timely conduct of examinations and publication of results, distribution of certificates, filling up of vacant posts, creation of new posts, setting up sports complexes in all the universities and maintenance of discipline and peace inside campuses – were discussed at length.
The conference also deliberated on promoting research activities, development of centres of excellence and grievance redressal mechanism at the university level.
Higher Education minister Ananta Das, Sports, Electronics and IT minister Chandra Sarathi Behera, Finance Minister Sashi Bhusan Behera and Tourism and Culture minister Ashok Chandra Panda attended the meeting.
In the wake of campus violence reported earlier in Utkal University, Ravenshaw Unversity and other campuses, disciplinary measures were discussed to properly deal with such challenges.
“While we have adopted some reforms in higher education sector, more such measures will be introduced in the future, said the Higher Education minister adding the government has planned uniform syllabus for all the universities in the State and examinations will also be conducted at the same time.
The Finance Minister said the government has sanctioned filling up of around 160 teaching posts in Utkal, RD Women’s University and Khallikote for which the process will commence shortly.
