Binjharpur: In a surprise turn of events, local police here in Jajpur district tried to frame a molestation victim in a false case of vehicle theft instead of coming to her aid, a report said Saturday. The incident sparked tension in the area.
According to reports, a woman in Udrang village under this police limits was molested Thursday by a co-villager Siba Prasad Rout on a village road in broad daylight. He, however, fled from the spot after she raised an alarm. The village women rushed to the spot and rescued her on hearing her screams.
They also tried to catch Rout but he managed to escape leaving his scooter (Honda Activa-OD-34D-6345) on the spot. The victim later lodged a complaint in Binjharpur police station.
However, police instead of acting on her complaint tried to frame the woman and her husband in a false case of vehicle theft, it was alleged.
In the absence of police IIC, an ASI is allegedly working behind the scene to protect Rout at the behest of some political leaders. The ASI is allegedly mounting pressure on the victim to withdraw her complaint failing which he has threatened to implicate the latter and her husband in a vehicle theft.
The police action has left her severely disappointed and she is planning to meet the SP Monday and lodge her complaint, it was learnt.
An official is trying to shield the accused after taking a bribe of Rs 10,000 from him, another personnel of the police station disclosed under condition of anonymity.
When contacted, sub-inspector Ghanashyam Hesa, the current in-charge of the police station feigned ignorance on the development but assured to review the charges after reaching the police station.
When contacted over phone Suchitrabirya Das, IIC of the police station who is on leave assured that the woman will definitely get justice following an investigation into the matter.
