Binjharpur: Two women, one of them a newly-wed, were found dead in separate incidents Sunday in this district. Police registered two cases and launched probes amid allegations that the two were murdered at their homes.
The incidents were reported from Kaina-Raghunathpur Narua village and Nuagaon village in Alakund panchayat under this police limits in Jajpur district.
In the first instance, Pratima, daughter of Golakh Das of Bamdevpur village, was found dead. She was married to Prabhat Mallick, son of Arjun Mallick, and “all dowry demands had been met” during the marriage.
Soon after the marriage, Prabhat and his parents demanded more dowry. When Pratima did not oblige, her husband and in-laws allegedly inflicted mental and physical torture on her.
One day earlier, Prabhat allegedly called Pratima’s father to say he would kill her if she did not bring more dowry. They again expressed their inability to meet the demand. The next day, her family members were called again by someone to say Pratima was found dead.
They rushed to the spot and complained to the police.
The body was sent for post-mortem to the district hospital (DHH). “Since then, Prabhat and his parents are absconding. Pratima’s father accused her husband and in-laws of strangling her to death,” police said.
Police registered a case of murder and launched a manhunt.
In the second incident, Parbati Jena, daughter of Kirtan Jena of Narua village, was found dead. She had been married to Anant Jena, son of Anand Jena of Raipur village. As she could not bear a child, Parbati’s in-laws accused her of being infertile and allegedly tortured her.
They had even tried to get Anant marry another girl. Meanwhile, Parbati was found in a critical condition by the neighbours who rescued the woman and rushed her to the local CHC. Doctors there declared her ‘brought dead’.
Parbati’s family accused her in-laws of eliminating her. “We have registered two separate cases and the accused will be arrested soon,” police said.
