Hinjilicut: In a shocking incident, an elderly man was bludgeoned with an iron road and subsequently strangled to death by his son over a property dispute at Samarjhola village under Hinjilicut police limits in Ganjam district.
Acting on the complaint filed by the victim’s family, police have registered a case of unnatural death and arrested the accused Monday. The accused has been identified as A. Dibakar Rao (41), son of the deceased A. Krishna Rao (75).
According to sources, Dibakar, who is youngest of five siblings – two sisters and three brothers, worked as a crane operator in a private company at Nagpur in Maharashtra.
Over the years, his relationship with his father had strained over property issues. He arrived from Nagpur at the village early Monday morning. Soon, he got into a fight with his elderly father for not getting him married and also for not giving him his share of the ancestral property.
When his elder brother intervened, Dibakar pushed the former out of the house and locked the door from inside. Later, he took an iron rod and bludgeoned the old man. Later, Dibakar strangled Krishna to death right in front of his sister-in-law and two minor nieces.
After the gruesome crime, Dibakar’s sister-in-law opened the house door letting her husband and other neigbhours in and locked Dibakar in a room. The elderly man was rushed to Hinjilicut community health centre (CHC), where he succumbed to the injuries.
On receiving information, a police team arrived at the village and arrested Dibakar. The police also seized the iron rod used by the accused to kill his father.
The body was seized and sent to Maharaja Krishna Chandra Gajapati (MKCG) Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur for postmortem.
Based on a complaint by Dibakar’s elder brother, police registered a case of murder and produced Dibakar in court. He was subsequently remanded to Berhampur jail as the court rejected his bail plea, Hinjilicut IIC Prasant Kumar Sahu said.
