Cuttack, Feb 17: Cantonment police busted a bike-lifting gang and arrested four of its members late Monday night. The police also seized eight motorcycles from their possession.
The arrested were identified as Sheikh Sanju alias Kadar of Patapol area, Sheikh Sheraj of Sutahaat, Sheikh Ashif of Kesharpur and Aktar Khan of Salipur areas.
According to police, the gang used to target crowded places and unlock motorcycles through master keys.
They used to sell the stolen bikes to their prospective buyers outside the district. Police got clues about the gang when Chittaranjan Sahu lodged a complaint with Cantonment police after his bike was stolen from Buxibazaar Square February 12.
A team of officials led by inspector-in-charge Biswajit Mohanty conducted raids at various locations in the city and arrested the four.
Sajnu, the ring leader, had been in jail and was released recently. Around 12 cases were pending against him at several police stations in the city, police said, adding, other arrested also had criminal antecedents.
Police said the arrested were produced in court Tuesday and efforts are on to nab other members of the gang.
