Phulbani: A man hacked his wife to death with an axe, suspecting her of having an extramarital affair at Khajuripada area in Kandhamal district Friday. He has been absconding after committing the heinous crime.
The deceased was identified as Sushama Mallick, wife of the deceased Nirakar Mallick. According to sources, a frequent fight prevailed between the couple as Nirakar suspected Sushama of having an extramarital affair.
Irate over the frequent quarrels, Sushama had gone to her parent’s house and had just returned home Thursday.
The couple broke out in a fight over the same issue Thursday night. In a fit of rage, Nirakar took an axe and hacked his wife. He then fled, leaving her profusely bleeding in a pool of blood. The woman later breathed her last due to excess loss of blood.
The matter came to the fore after neighbours suspected foul play when no one came out of the house Friday morning. They broke open the door and found the woman dead while Nirakar was missing and alerted the police.
The body was seized and sent for post-mortem while a manhunt was launched to nab the absconder.
