Bhubaneswar: Friendship is like a wine which if brewed for years tastes better and better. For the present generation tech-savvy youth, Friendship Day has become an occasion to share videos in Instagram or Facebook, more or less, while some till today rely on the archaic way of greeting cards.
We have a million friends in our social media handles but how many of us can recall five names with who we can have a decent conversation. Gone are those where you take a sip of coffee or tea and blather on and on. And here rises a question- Can there be any communication sans speech?
The inmates of Bipin Bihari Choudhury School for Deaf would defy any postulates of communication that necessitates speech.
“God has denied them of hearing ability but that doesn’t deter them from forming bonds or befriending anybody,” Sumitra, the school matron,” said.
On the occasion of World Friendship Day, Orissa POST interacted with various inmates of the school who seemed to defy the norms of conventional friendship.
Rounak Sahu and Adi Roul are two friends whose friendship has only grown stronger and stronger and never less. Everyday Adi calls Rounak during mealtime and refuses to take a bite if the latter does not feed him.
Rounak in turn makes sure that he feeds Adi and together they are at bliss as their bonhomie testifies. Through his sign language Rounak with a smile said, “Adi doesn’t know what the friendship day is all about, but I’ve planned to buy him some balloons and sweets.”
Another kind of adorable bonding was seen between inmates Niki Maharana and Bedamati Chendi who till date eat from a single plate.
Interestingly, whenever the warden tries to serve them on two different plates they would refuse to eat.
“For the last three years, the duo has remained so. Look at them and say that they regret anything in their life. They have their friends and that’s what anybody requires in life,” added the matron.
