Puri: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) Saturday started repairing a joint between the main structure of Srimandir and Jagamohan.
Sources said the ASI would examine the joint thoroughly after removing the lime plaster. “Preliminary examination has found several loosened stones at the joint. We would replace these stones with new ones. Moreover, we would go for grouting and pinning to strengthen the structure,” said a source in the ASI.
According to sources, the ASI would take up repair of the joints between Jagamohan and Natamandap and between Natamandap and Bhogamandap in the second phase. “All these repairs will be completed within one and half months,” added the source.
Archaeologist Bijay Kumar Rath claimed that the main structure of Srimandir was built during the rule of Chodaganga Dev around 1150 AD while Jagamohan was constructed within 1200 AD and 1220 AD. Moreover, the Bhogamandap was built during the reign of Purusottam Dev around 1500 AD while the Natamandap was constructed at Srimandir during the rule of Mukunda Dev around 1600 AD.
“All these structures at Srimandir were built over a period of 400 years. So, there is every chance of rainwater leakage at joints between structures. We should inspect them properly and carry out repair work,” he added.
