Another 19 held for Puri bandh violence

Puri: Police Sunday arrested another 19 persons in connection with violence in the Holy City during a bandh called by Sri Jagannath Sena October 3.
The arrested were sent to jail after a local court rejected their bail pleas.
It is to be noted here that as many as 23 persons have been arrested by police in connection with the violence and while Singhadwar police has registered nine cases, seven cases have been registered at Town police station.
Town police arrested 11 persons on a case registered on the basis of an FIR filed by assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Jitendra Kumar Gumansingh.
The arrested were identified as Sandip Padhi of Markandeswar Sahi, Sukanta Lama and Sashikant Lama of Banmalipur, Rajendra Singh and Dhirendra Barik of Chudangsahi, Smrutiranjan Das of Kapileshwarpur, Binod Kumar Panda and Santosh Behera of Khuntia Bagicha, Satyanarayan Patra of Chandanpur and Kanha Padhi and Satyanarayan Nayak of Hadagodia Sahi.
Sources said all the arrested were booked for theft, attempt to murder and mistreatment to women and vandalism. It is learnt that the FIR lodged by the ASI mentioned the name of 50 people including Binayak Das Mahapatra, Damodar Mahasuar, Sourav Chand, Gopal Panda, Prasanna Dash, Madan Mahasuar, Bhabani Prasad Dasmahapatra, Akhaya Kumar Mohanty and Somanath Khuntia.
Similarly, Singhadwar police arrested eight persons in connection with two cases pertaining to the violent activities during the bandh.
According to sources, Singhadwar police arrested a minor in connection with the ransacking of Srimandir information centre. They had registered a case in this regard as per a complaint filed by the centre announcer Muktikanta Pratihari.
Singhadwar police also arrested seven persons on charges of ransacking of Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) office during the bandh. The arrested were identified as Jagannath Pratihari of Manikarnika Sahi, Gagankumar Ghos of Mangala Ghat, Rakesh Sahu of Markandeswar Sahi, Ramkrushna Pratihari of Matimandap Sahi, Kisan Bej of Balisahi, Gopal Lal of Kalika Devi Sahi and Shankar Panda of Chudangsahi.
Police had registered a case with regards to the ransacking of SJTA office on the basis of a complaint filed by Srimandir administrator (rituals).
Meanwhile, around 40 street vendors, between Lions’ gate and SJTA office were detained by the police Sunday. The vendors were interrogated and the CCTV footages nearby their shops were reviewed. However, as no strong evidences were found against them, they were later released. The police have collected data of these street vendors during preliminary investigations. Sources said the vendors would be under cops’ scanner as the enquiry process is still on.
