Joda/Jhumpura: An elephant trampled an elderly man to death in Patuakudar forest under Champua range in Keonjhar district Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Harihar Nayak (60) of Kendughati village. Harihar is survived by his wife and four children.
Bamebari forester Jatindra Kumar Sahu said Harihar and his son had gone to Kasia forest and on the way back home an elephant attacked them. His son ran away while the animal trampled Harihar to death.
On being tipped off, the forester rushed to the spot and sent the body for post-mortem. Police registered a case of unnatural death.
The forester said the bereaved family will be provided with a sum of Rs 40,000 in a day or two while a compensation of Rs 3.60 lakh will be paid to the family on furnishing of legal heir certificates and other relevant documents.
According to the forest department, 18 elephants have strayed into the range recently.
