Bhubaneswar, Dec 11: Day 2 of the National Tribal Dance Festival at Utkal Mandap saw memorable performances from troupes who have come from across the country.
Tribal dances by troupes from Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and host state Orissa kept the audience glued to their seats.
The function began with the presentation of Pardhauni dance by the Baiga tribe from Madhya Pradesh, which was followed by a Dhemsa dance performance by the Paraja tribe of Orissa. The Rathwa tribe troupe from Gujarat presented the Diwari dance, while the Kharia tribe from Jharkhand presented Kuanri Lousawa dance.
Dancers from Oraon tribe of Orissa presented Sahrul dance while dancers from Uttarakhand and Chhattisgarh also enthralled the audience with performances of traditional dances of the Bhutia and Muria tribes.
“We are a group of 20 dancers belonging to the Baiga tribe of Madhya Pradesh. We’re performing for the first time in the state and we’re very excited and hoping for positive response from the audience,” said Shiv Kumar, leader of the Baiga dance troupe. “We will present the dance which is performed during the marriage ceremony to welcome the newly-married couple. Effigies of elephants are prepared on which the bride’s brother is seated. The unmarried boys and girls dance around the elephant,” Kumar added.
Troupe leader Kailu Ekka of the Oraon tribe from Orissa was enthusiastic about the other tribes performing in the festival. “There are 13 members in my group. We have performed earlier also in the festival. Since we are the host tribe it is really interesting to know about other tribes that have come from different parts of the country,” Ekka said.
The three-day landmark festival is being organised by the SC and ST Research and Training Institute (SCSTRTI) in
collaboration with the Indira
Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya (IGRMS).
