Bhubaneswar, April 18: Art students at the BK College of Art and Craft wanting to express their creativity got what they wanted – in the form of an exhibition titled ‘Kalpana – an art of imagination’ at Lalit Kala Akademi here Saturday.
“What an artist craves the most is appreciation for his art. This exhibition was therefore an attempt to provide students a much-needed platform to give wings to their creativity and display their works to the public,” said Gajendra Padhi, head of the applied art department of the institute.
Around 11 final year students of applied art of the college exhibited their creations, which were mostly based on the theme of presenting products in various promotional ways.
“It is a platform for students to show their talent which would help them enter the world of advertising. Every year, the department organises such exhibitions in which final year students of the department come up with unique ideas of promoting a product. Each student prepares an advertisement for some imaginary brands. They create a product and then come up with an art campaign using different mediums of advertisement,” Padhi said.
“The ‘Kalpana’ platform is now 14 years old and is still eliciting a strong response. It is a wonderful opportunity for students to get a solid idea about the world of advertising and the working style of the industry,” Padhi added.
Sunil Kumar Bala, a final year student of Applied Art said he used jewellery products for his project. “I came up with a fictional jewellery brand for this exhibition as jewellery is something that attracts everybody’s attention. I have designed posters, hoardings,, web pages, logos, visiting cards and other things. It is an opportunity for us to showcase our abilities and I hope I will make a mark in the advertising sector,” Bala said.
“I used ice cream as my brand for the advertisement. I chose this as it is summer time and people like to relish ice cream this time of the year. During the academic session, we were taught different aspects of advertisement and how to create publicity for our product. I like the advertisement sector and hope I would be able to achieve success in this field,” said Ranjita Khatua, another final year student of the college.
Secretary of culture Aravind Padhee, director of culture Sushil Kumar Das, and film and communication consultant Ambujh Satpathy were in attendance.
