Bhubaneswar, April 19: Hockey Gangpur defeated Association of Indian Universities (AIU) by 3-2 in a tense Pool B encounter of the Senior Men National Hockey Championship at Pune Sunday.
AIU went ahead in the 25th minute when Manpreet Singh scored after sneaking in Gangpur’s defence line. However, Gangpur kept on attacking and in the 43rd minute, Amulya Minz skipped the challenge of opposition’s defenders and scored a brilliant goal to equalise.
Rasananda Khalkho then stormed into AIU’s half and deposited the ball at the back of the net to take a 2-1 lead in the 51st minute. However, in the very next minute, AIU went on a counter and Jatin Singh equalised without giving any chance to the Ganpur custodian.
Just when the match was heading for a draw, Deepak Lakra showed his class by dribbling past two AIU’s defenders and slotted home the winning goal for his team.
In another match of Pool B, Hockey Jharkhand edged past Comptroller & Auditor General of India (CAG) 1-0 with Deepak Kujur scoring the lone goal of the match.
