New Delhi, May 25: Crime against women has increased considerably in tribal and undeveloped districts of Orissa in 12 years between 2001 and 2012.
According to a report released by National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB), Mayurbhanja, Ganjam and Keonjhar districts have witnessed a spurt in crimes twelve years up to 2012.
There is also a sharp rise in rape cases in Balasore district in 2011 and 2012. Incidents like rape, abductions, dowry deaths, assault on women with an intent to outrage her modesty, domestic cruelty by men in marital life and trafficking of girls were taken into account.
Most rape cases were reported in Mayurbhanj district while a maximum number of cases of assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty were found in Ganjam district.
Offences under these two categories were found in Keonjhar, Koraput and Nabarangpur districts.
In so far as the coastal districts are concerned; Balasore registered more number of rape cases in these 12 years.
Khurda district, which had more rape cases reported in the first five years, saw a steady decline in such cases between 2008 and 2012. But, there is a sudden rise in cases like assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty in Khurda district in 2012.
Anugul district has witnessed a surge in crimes against women in 2011 and 2012. Boudh, Nuapada and Gajapati districts have reported less number of cases during the period.
In 2012, crime rate has gone up in all districts in the state.
