Bhubaneswar, May 25: City girl Namrata Mohanty was a joint topper in the Bhubaneswar region in Class XII, results of which were announced by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Monday. The region also includes neigbouring Chhattisgarh and West Bengal.
Mohanty, a student of Unit VIII DAV school, secured 493 marks out of 500. Deep Bhattacharyya of DPS-Ruby Park, Kolkata is the other topper. Both Mohanty and Bhattacharyya are from the science stream.
Ayush Agrawal of APJ School, Salt Lake, Kolkata topped in commerce while Ankita Ghosal of BDM International School, Kolkata topped in arts.
As many as 48,881 students appeared for the Class XII board exam this year from this region out of which 39,597 students passed. Overall pass percentage worked out to 81 per cent compared to all-India rate of 82 per cent. About 86.07 per cent of girls cleared the exam while the percentage for boys stood at 81.91.
Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas performed well and secured a pass percentage of 97.94 per cent of which 98.31 per cent are boys and 97.35 are girls. Government schools affiliated to CBSE displayed a dismal show by having just 56.38 per cent pass rate.
Similarly, Kendriya Vidyalayas had a pass percentage of 92.9 per cent with a gender ratio of 91.53 per cent of boys and 94.42 per cent of girls . Independent schools scored a 83.77 per cent pass rate while Central Tibetan School Administration secured 93.33 per cent.
“The overall pass percentage is good. However, looking at the poor results of the government schools, I can only say that they need to improve their infrastructure and bring in quality teaching,” said Lakhan Lal Meena, regional officer of CBSE, Bhubaneswar.
