State toll spirals to 67; Titilagarh sizzles at season’s highest 47.6

Bhubaneswar, May 26: As many as 17 persons reportedly died due to sunstroke Tuesday with the toll going up to 67 in the state.
The Special Relief Commissioner’s report on sunstroke deaths revealed a highest of 15 deaths from Ganjam followed by 12 in Jajpur, eight in Cuttack, seven in Kendrapara and six in Khurda.
Keonjhar reported five deaths while three persons died in Dhenkanal. Puri, Ryagada and Jagatsinghpur reported two deaths each while Balasore, Bargarh, Bhadrak, Mayurbhanj and Nuapada had one death each.
Two of the deceased Tuesday were identified as Bula Barik (60) from Dhenkanal and Ashok Bhuyan (40) from Cuttack while nine from Jajpur were affected by heatwave.
Eleven places recorded high mercury Tuesday with the meteorological centre here recording the season’s highest of 47.6 degree Celsius at Titilagarh. Hirakud remained the second hottest with a recorded temperature of 46.6 degree Celsius followed by Sambalpur 46.4, Jharsuguda and Balangir 46 degree Celsius each.
Despite extreme heatwave condition, a few places recorded a fall in temperature including in the capital city and its adjoining areas. The Met office has predicted a decline in heat from May 30.
Light rain or thundershowers may occur at one or two places in coastal Orissa and in northern parts of the state including Balasore and Mayurbhanj over next 24 hours whereas weather will remain mostly sunny over rest of the state.
Weather over the capital city and its adjoining areas will remain cloudy with the maximum day temperature hovering around 40 degree Celsius. The city may experience rain or thundershowers Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the heatwave sweeping through Telangana and Andhra Pradesh claimed 90 more lives in the two states, taking the toll to over 800. While 55 people succumbed to sunstroke in Andhra Pradesh, 35 were killed in Telangana.
