Bhubaneswar: A Bhubaneswar based female tutor attempted suicide Sunday after a video of her harassment by parents of her students went viral on social media platforms.
According to reports, the video shows the tutor being stripped and forced to go round the area by the guardians of her students. The police, however, allegedly booked her and her husband in a fabricated case of her husband misbehaving with a girl student instead of taking action against the precipitators.
Unable to bear the social stigma and insult, the tutor reportedly took the extreme step.
According to the woman, she and her husband had been running a private coaching center at Dhirukuti slum. Her husband had been to a girl student’s house to collect outstanding fees of Rs 7,000.
However, the student’s family members had an altercation with her husband over the issue. Subsequently, the family members created a ruckus, alleging that her husband had misbehaved with their daughter.
Believing the allegation, some local residents ganged up and started thrashing the teacher and later made him go round the village after tonsuring him.
She rushed to her husband’s rescue after learning of the incident; however, she also had to face the wrath of the irate people. She was roughed up; her clothes were torn, removed and was forced to do rounds in the locality.
The police later reached the spot and took her husband to police station.
Since the family members had accused her husband of misbehaving with their daughter, police had arrested him May 29. She has alleged that the police are not taking her version of allegation seriously even after the video showing how she and her husband were being misbehaved and manhandled.
The woman had registered a case at Mancheswar police station, alleging that her husband has been implicated in a false case. She has alleged that the police are not taking the case seriously.
When contacted, Mancheswar police station IIC Jitendra Nath Sethi said, “We have arrested the male tutor after preliminary investigation. A case has been registered regarding him being tonsured. However we are yet to get any information about the viral video. The matter is under investigation.”
