Antwerp (Belgium), June 13: Prolific forward Ritu Rani stated here Friday that the Indian eves are well prepared for the FIH Hockey World League Semifinals here after working hard on improving the passing and coordination.
Speaking about the tournament starting June 20 here, the 21-year-old said she is extensively working on ball possession and improving her short passing skills.
“The tournament is really tough but the aim is getting the berth for Rio Olympics. We are geared up as a team. I think the key will be to take the crucial passes as this enables keeping possession of the ball and moving further towards the opponent’s defensive areas,” Rani said.
“This is possible if we keep pace with each other. We have been working on our passes and tackles and we are confident of a good start. We have the ability to finish on top,” Rani added.
Speaking on fellow striker Vandana Katariya’s return to the squad after an injury layoff, Rani said her inclusion would definitely benefit the side.
“We clearly missed her during the Hawke’s Bay Cup. Her being back in the team strengthens our attack as she is good with her speed and skills to break through the opposition defence. Her speed is her asset as she can wrongfoot any opponent with her runs down the middle,” stated Rani. “Above all her opportunism in front of the goal will be an asset for us.”
India play their first match June 20 against Belgium.
