Bhubaneswar, June 13: The deteriorating education system of the country was in focus at Rabindra Mandap Saturday evening with Bargarh-based Space Theatre staging the play Ekulu.
The 75-minute play, which was performed by around 20 artistes and was staged as part of the ongoing Natyadhara drama festival, has been written and directed by Arun Kumar Sahu.
“The play is about the deteriorating education system in our country. It portrays how a labourer who is keen that his child Ekulu does well in life, toils hard to fulfill his dream but fails,” said Sahu.
“Through our play we have tried to portray how our schools have become a machine where the noble profession of teaching has turned out to be a business and how only children from affluent families can prosper in such a scenario,” he said.
The rain that lashed the city Saturday evening did not prevent people from thronging the venue. “I love watching dramas. Often, dramas performed at these theatres have far greater impact than successful films. I have seen several plays staged at this auditorium. Like always, I did not want to miss the chance of seeing this play,” said Sandhya Mishra, a 26-year-old city-based theatre enthusiast.
“I love dramas. I often try to squeeze in some time to take part in some plays. The subject matter of the play was really interesting and I was keen to see how it is projected on stage,” said Sangram Dash, an advocate from the city.
