Angul: Going by a four-months-old ultrasound report, a doctor working in a private nursing home here performed a surgery on a woman to remove a tumour that didn’t really exist.
The husband of the patient Wednesday registered a police compliant against the diagnostic centre that provided the ultrasound report and the owner of the nursing home in this context.
According to the complaint, Liza Gochhayat, a resident of Khalari area on the outskirts of the town, had been suffering from abdominal pain and undergoing treatment at the nursing home for the same since past six months.
As the treatment could not give her any relief, the doctor had advised her to undergo an ultrasound scan.
Liza’s ultrasound scan was done at a diagnostic centre March 16. As it was mentioned in the report that she has a tumor, the doctor had asked her to undergo a surgery.
Accordingly, family members got her admitted to a nursing home in the town Wednesday. The operation was performed at 2:00pm. About 20 minutes after, the nursing home authorities somehow told the relatives of the patient that Liza did not have a tumor in her abdomen.
The revelation irked the family members and tension ran high at the nursing home for some time.
The doctors and the nursing home staff allegedly hurled abuses at the patient’s husband after he accused them of performing operations for pecuniary benefits. He has even mentioned in his complaint that his wife’s life is at risk.
The concerned doctor and the owner of the nursing home, meanwhile, argued that the surgery had been carried out based on the ultrasound report.
“It is the fault of the diagnostic centre. However, the treatment would be provided to the woman free of cost until she recovers,” the nursing home owner said.
After receiving the complaint, the police have started investigating into the matter. A case would be registered against the guilty, a source in the police station said.
