Kaptipada: A Class X girl reportedly died at the hostel of Shalachua Government High School under Kaptipada block in Mayurbhanj district Friday. Her death sparked tension in the area while locals staged an agitation blocking a road.
The deceased was identified as Durgadevi Singh (16), daughter of Uday Singh of Bishnupur.
About 10 days ago, she had visited her house and came back to the hostel.
Wednesday night, the school authorities had informed her family that Durgadevi was sick. Later, she was admitted to Kaptipada hospital and then shifted to Udala hospital. Finally, as her condition worsened, she was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack where she died Thursday noon.
As her body reached home Friday, locals blocked Kaptipada-Sharat road. Laying the body on the road, locals demanded compensation to the bereaved family.
It is learnt that Durgadevi had not gone to school and was asleep in the hostel that day. The headmaster of the school had not enquired about her absence in the class, her relative alleged.
However, Headmaster Laxmidhar Kabat said some students had told him that she had eaten some toxic seeds for which she was given necessary treatment.
Suspecting negligence by the school authorities, the family members of the deceased demanded a prob.
