Sambalpur: Civic life in Sambalpur district was paralysed due to incessant rain which battered for more than 72 hours. Although, Sunday the town witnessed less rainfall, people were in panicky as 102 houses were damaged in the area.
Emergency cell sources said incessant rain damaged 90 houses partially and 12 houses completely. Moreover, 12 houses in different villages of Dhanakauda block were also completely damaged.
Reports said Themrapada, Basiapada and Jujumara villages were also affected and houses were damaged. Road communication was ceased and the area was cut-off at Biraghat village due to road breach, created by incessant rain. The river Mahanadi was swelling gradually and had created a flood-like situation.
However, with a sigh of relief, after the rainfall declined in Sambalpur district, people returned home from Motijharan and Babubandha relief camps and started setting aside their households. Those who had lost their shelters were in distress and most of their household articles were not in usable condition.
On being contacted, the emergency cell in-charge Subhasmita Mishra said, “We have opened flood shelters at 19 different places. However, we are yet to receive the complete report about infrastructure loss.”
The district administration is prepared to face any eventuality of flood. Nearly 25 families of Sunapali were accommodated at the flood shelter and provided dry foods including medicines, she added.
