New Delhi, Sept 7: Oriya girls have showcased their talent in various fields and brought laurels to the state. After singing sensation Ananya, another 13-year-old girl, Anwesha Mishra, Monday won silver medal in 29th National U-13 (open & girls) Chess Championship 2015 in Gurgaon.
In a four-hour-long mind boggling game, Anwesha achieved this feat by defeating higher rated players from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Delhi.
Anwesha’s father Prakash Kumar Mishra who had accompanied her to the competition venue told Orissa POST, ‘‘I feel very happy today. The most important point is that Anwesha remained unbeaten in the championship. She also added 84 ELO rating points”.
On being asked about her ambition, Anwesha said, “I would like to get Women’s International Master title in future. I also want to be a doctor.”
Anwesha, a standard VIII student of St. Josheph’s Girls’ High School at Cuttack follows a very strict routine and maintains balance between her studies and chess practice.
Anwesha’s mother Reena Mishra who was also present during the tournament in Gurgaon said, “It is very difficult for a child of her (Anwesha) age to balance both studies and chess. What I understand one has to dedicate a lot of time in practice to be a player of national and international repute.”
Her father, who was elated after Monday’s tournament added, “Her rating will be about 1850. She will stand third of her age group of players at national level”.
She had earlier won silver and bronze medals in National U-9 Chess Championship in 2011 and National U-11 Chess Championship in 2013 respectively.
Anwesha who is the eldest daughter of her parents is undergoing chess training under Rajesh Nayak of Bhubaneswar.
