West Bengal BJP president and Lok Sabha MP Dilip Ghosh is known for his unscientific temper.
After claiming that Indian cows’ milk contains gold in November, 2019, Ghosh has now suggested cow urine as a traditional immunity booster.
Ghosh has urged Indian women to force family members to practice using traditional remedies in order to stay fit and free of diseases. It was in this context that he promoted cow urine as a potential remedy in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.
“If I talk about cows people fall sick. I tell them a donkey will not understand the worth of cow. This is India, the land of Lord Krishna and here cows are God, we worship. We will have cow urine to stay healthy. Take ayurvedic medicine and don’t worry,” said Ghosh Thursday while holding ‘Chai pe Charcha’ in Durgapur, West Bengal.
Ghosh highlighted India’s ancient Ayurvedic practices of consuming Tulsi leaves and offering them to deities during prayers, which according to him, symbolises their significance in supporting health.
“Tulsi is used in every Puja, Bengal Quince is used to worshiping Lord Shiva. Tulsi and Bengal Quince are given to us as ‘prasad’. Our forefathers have practised that to stay healthy. Cow urine and stool are used in ‘panchamrit’ (Hindu religious solution), that too for the same purpose,” he said
Unsurprisingly, Ghosh’s medical tips have incurred a lot of criticism.
“It’s unfortunate and playing on the ignorance of the common masses. BJP is using religion to convince people that their right to health can be supplanted by home remedies. It’s is a classical example of distraction to the fact that government of India has failed miserably in combating the pandemic and in giving treatment to the people. They are not worried about lack of ventilators, oxygen cylinders and other amenities”, said Dr Fuad Halim, a prominent practising doctor and also a CPIM leader.
With a record single-day surge of 34,956 cases, India’s COVID-19 tally zoomed past ten lakh Friday, just three days after it crossed the nine-lakh mark, according to Union Health Ministry data.
