Bhubaneswar, Jan 1: The India Meteorological Department Thursday predicted moderate to rather heavy rainfall at many places in southern and northern Orissa in the next 48 hours in view of a low pressure area that had formed over the Bay of Bengal.
The well-marked low pressure area Wednesday has intensified into a low pressure area Thursday and lay centered over west central Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Andhra Pradesh and south Orissa coasts.
The system would trigger strong and gusty winds with speed reaching up to 55 kmph off Orissa coast in the next 24 hours. The Met department has warned fisherman not to venture into the sea.
Met director Sarat Sahu told Orissa POST that the weather will improve after January 4 and the cold wave condition will continue to prevail over many parts of the state. “The ongoing system would generate moisture in the air, leading to fog that could reduce visibility to 500 meters in some parts of the state after January 3,” warned Sahu.
Daringbadi received the highest rainfall of 31mm, followed by Gopalpur 20mm in the past 24 hours. The maximum temperature remained around 20 degree Celsius while the minimum temperature has been recorded at 15 degrees Celsius at most places in the state.
The weatherman predicted cloudy skies for the capital city and adjoining areas, adding that light rain and thundershowers are probable in the next 24 hours. The maximum and minimum temperature will remain around 23 and 17 degree Celsius, respectively, Friday.
