Bhubaneswar, Jan 3: Residents of Niladri Vihar have a lot to be upset and angry about. They lack access to basic facilities like well-built roads, a proper drainage system, public toilets and clean drinking water. Although they have been facing hardships for a long time the civic authorities have turned a blind eye to the pestering problems.
All the major roads in the area are in a poor state due mainly to civic negligence. With potholes, ditches and pebbles, the roads have become dangerous for commuters.
“Accidents are quite frequent in these roads,” says Hrushikesh Swain, a resident of Niladri Vihar, phase-1.
Drainage and sanitation are the other major problems. The drains are choked with polythene bags and other waste material; dirty drain water can be seen flowing on the roads. Besides, the residents are also deprived of proper sanitation facilities. The waste management system of BMC is hardly operational in this area. Lack of public toilets is another major problem.
Certain parts of Niladri Vihar like the Buddha Park area, Sunrise colony and Satsanga Vihar are congested and unclean and have thus, become mosquito-breeding sites. It deserves mention that last year a resident of Sunrise colony was diagnosed with dengue.
“We have written several letters to the BMC to take steps to tackle the mosquito menace but nothing has been done so far,” groused Nirakar Nayak, a resident of Sunrise colony.
Monalisha Sahoo, corporator, BMC ward No 8, has reportedly assured that a mosquito oil tanker would be sent to the area soon. About the pathetic condition of the roads she has assured that renovation work would be taken up in the near future.
“It will take some time to repair all the roads and drains in the area,” she said.
