Bhubaneswar: The commissionerate police will organise driving classes for women at the Road Safety and Traffic Training Park here from January 11 to 17.
The weeklong driving classes, being organised as part of the twin-city police observing Road Safety Week, will be exclusively for women, said Bhubaneswar traffic ACP Jatindra Kumar Panda to Orissa POST.
A free eye check-up camp will also be organised during the Road Safety Week programme. “Good eyesight is very important for driving safe. We will set up an eye check-up camp so that people can ascertain the strength of their sight,” said Panda.
Road Safety Week is observed every year across India in most cities and towns. In Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, the public receives guidance and information on how to drive safe and keep fit by attending a variety of programmes organised to promote road safety.
“By following just a few simple rules and keeping in mind the safety of self and fellow users of the road, all motorists can help make roads in our towns and cities friendly to all citizens,” said Panda.
According to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), at least 10 people die every day in road accidents on an average in the state.
The number of deaths due to road accidents in 2014 in the state was 3,981. From 2005 to 2014, there were around 88,036 road accidents in the state, which resulted in the deaths of 34,215 people and injuries sustained by more than 1 lakh people, according to NCRB data.
Speeding and rash driving are the two leading causes of road accidents in the twin cities and in the state, say police officials.
