Bhubaneswar, Jan 1: Laxmimani Singh and Basant Maleka were adjudged ‘Strong Girl’ and ‘Strong Boy’ respectively in the National Junior Powerlifting Championships which concluded Thursday at Jamshedpur. Orissa also emerged overall champions in the meet.
Laxmimani lifted a total of 272.50kg in the girls’ 47kg category to clinch the gold medal. Rupali Palei won the gold medal in the 43kg category with a lift of 247.50kg while Simarani Singh also clinched a silver medal in the 43kg category.
In the boys’ 53kg category, Basant bagged the gold medal with a total lift of 427kg. Samarendra Routray and Rakesh Bhukta secured silver medals in the 66kg and 93kg categories respectively.
In the Masters-1 120kg category, Ashok Prasad lifted of 510k category to win the gold medal. Jitendra Behera also won a gold in the Masters-2 83 kg category with a lift of 495kg.
Rakesh, Subhasis share lead
Orissa players continued to dominate the show as Rakesh Kumar Nayak and Subhasis Barik with six points each, emerged joint leaders after the end of the seventh round of the Ist Berhampur All India Open Fide Rating Chess Championships at Berhampur, Friday.
Both the players stunned their higher-rated opponents on the day. Rakesh made a mincemeat of Ramanathan Balasubramaniam of Tamil Nadu, while Subhasis got the better of statemate Ashutosh Mishra.
Seven players are sharing the joint second spot with 5.5 points apiece. They are Ramanathan, Soumyaranjan Mishra, CN Sampath, Rajendra Kumar Sahu, SVC Chakravarthi, Nilsu Patnaik and Ansuman Samal.
