Bahalda, Jan 1: The government spends crores of rupees towards rural development, but there are many villages in Gopabandhunagar block of Mayurbhanj district where people have to suffer in the absence of basic facilities like road communication.
A case in point is Gendugudia village where residents have long been demanding roads and bridges, but the district administration and local leaders have allegedly not done anything to alleviate their sufferings.
“In election time, leaders come and pledge a lot, but nothing happens even long after the elections,” villagers lamented.
In rainy season, the village remains cut off from the rest of the world when nearby rivers like Gangahar and Arikula swell, flooding the entire region.
“Then, we leave everything to our destiny when venturing out of the village is a difficult proposition. Anybody can imagine what would be the situation of patients and pregnant women needing emergency treatment,” villagers bemoaned.
The village inhabited by 500 people, is just 3 km away from Bhandagan panchayat, but sadly the administration has failed to take note of the basic problems of villagers.
The residents cross the two rivers at Sinduria ghat to get to the panchayat and block offices. In dry season, villagers have to lay a temporary road across the riverbed for communication. But the situation worsens in rainy season when problems of the people compound as communication gets completely disrupted.
A road leading to the village is nothing but a cart track passing through the rivers. People have to wade through the waters to reach Khunta bazaar, panchayat office and block office.
“Though we have repeatedly drawn the attention of the administration and political leaders to our basic problems, we only get promises, but no concrete results,” said villager.
BDO Bibekananda Sahu said sarpanch Phulamani Marandi has put forth a proposal of a bridge at the ghat in last Panchayat Samiti meeting.
