Bhubaneswar, Jan 2: Rakesh Kumar Nayak of Orissa emerged champion in the Ist Berhampur All India Fide Rating Chess Championship, which concluded Saturday at Berhampur. Rakesh took the top honours with 7.5 points out of a possible nine.
IM Ramnathan Balasubramaniam of Tamil Nadu stood second with seven points. FM Soumyaranjan Mishra and Ansuman Samal of Orissa secured the third and the fourth positions respectively. Both of them bagged seven points each, but their respective positions were decided on the basis of Buchhlollz tie-breaker points.
In the ninth and the final round, Rakesh forced Rajendra Kumar Sahu to sign peace with him. Subhasis Barik also held Ramnathan to a draw. Soumyaranjan outwitted SVC Chakravarthi, while Ansuman made mincemeat of WFM Rutumbara Bidhar in a one-sided contest.
Other important results: Nilsu Patnaik bt Kamal Lochan Padhi, Ashutosh Mohapatra bt Sanjeeb Kumar Charchi, Rabindra Kumar Ojha bt Ramen Karmakar, Hrushikesh Rath bt SC Naga, Srinibas Mishra lost to Kiran Prabhat Sabat, Partha Sarathi Satpathy drew with S R Srinivasa.

Sports Hostel of Cuttack entered the semifinals of the Tamando Cup football tournament after beating Orissa Homeguards, Cuttack 2-0 here Saturday. Sujit Tirkey and Bikash Padhihari scored for the winning team in the 30th and the 90th minutes respectively.
