Annual issue has come under fire thanks to a terrible blunder in a blurb, which says pakistanian is the language spoken in pak
New York, Jan 7: A new language has been born and it is called Pakistanian. DC Comics has been mocked for suggesting Pakistanis speak ‘Pakistanian’ in its recent annual edition featuring Superman and Wonder Woman. In a caption of one of its latest comics, a group of shepherds in the Shimshal region of Pakistan are being menaced, until the superheroes show up.
But the dialogue is “all translated from Pakistanian”, apparently that is what Pakistanis speak.
Numerous tweets have been posted bashing DC for such a careless and ignorant blunder. And this comes in an age when the folks over at Marvel recently debuted the new Ms Marvel Kamala Khan, a Pakistani-American teenager, a property spearheaded by Sana Amanat, a woman with a similar background.
“Here’s why @Marvel is winning over @DCComics — the latter thinks we speak Pakistanian,” tweeted a Pakistani user by the name of Khaver Siddiqi.
“Ermmm…Who can teach me #Pakistanian? I’m from Pakistan and only know Urdu,” tweeted another user named Naima Zabin.
In the second story of the annual, Clark Kent (Superman) and Diana (Wonder Woman) travel to Pakistan to retrieve stolen Amazonian weaponry from a thieving demigod named Dichara. So far so comic-y. But then things take a turn for the worse. The dialogue is obviously in English, but to create some sense of authenticity, the editors place dialogue spoken by non-English speakers in chevrons. They’ve done that here as well. Only according to them, this particular conversation has been translated from the ‘Pakistanian’. “So many Pakistanis outraged that Urdu was called Pakistanian. Where is the outrage about Ahmadi Pakistanians being jailed for selling books?” tweeted another user called Yasser Latif Hamdani. AGENCIES
