Bhubaneswar: The state government has decided to provide power supply to all BPL category families under the Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana (RGGVY) in the next two years. This comes as part of its efforts to ensure electricity supply to all poor families.
This decision was taken at the state level vigilance and monitoring committee meeting held under the chairmanship of panchayati raj minister Arun Kumar Sahoo.
Central PSUs such as National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) have been engaged to implement the initiative to ensure power supply to all BPL families.
The Centre has approved 31 projects worth Rs 3,550.75 crore under the scheme, official, which will benefit about 16.68 lakh BPL category people of 3,144 villages and 16,533 hamlets, sources said. The government would also spend around `1,656 crore for rural electrification under the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY).
Panchayati raj secretary DK Singh said the state government aims to create 760 lakh mandays by spending `23.36 crore under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). Of this, the state has spent `14.84 crore for creation of 528 lakh mandays under the Act.
The state government has asked the executing officers to construct 2,000 houses per day to meet the construction target of 7 lakh houses this year, with regard to rural housing.
Public representatives and government officers also discussed the implementation of social sector programmes, including creating employment opportunities, and those regarding rural water supply, road, education and health.
