England move closer to win as Ashwin departs

Chennai: England moved closer to victory in the first Test against India by dismissing Ravichandran Ashwin. He was dismissed by Jack Leach to leave India tottering at 175 for seven

Kohli wages lone battle, gets to 50

Chennai: Indian skipper Virat Kohli continued to wage a lone battle for India as he reached his half century against England at the Chepauk Stadium here Tuesday. Kohli has so far faced 74 balls and hit six boundaries. Giving him company was Ravichandran Ashwin (nine batting). India were 156 for six at the time of filing this report.

India 144 for six at lunch

Chennai: India went into lunch Tuesday, the fifth day of the first Test against England at 144 for six. Skipper Virat Kohli was waging a lone battle batting on 45. Giving him company was Ravichandran Ashwin (nine batting). India were 39 for one at stumps on the fourth day. It means they have added 105 runs for the loss of five wickets in the first session of the fifth day. It now looks a formality for England as they are favourites to win this game.

Washington Sundar falls for a duck

Chennai: India were reduced to 117 for six with Washington Sundar getting out for a duck. He lasted only five balls and was dismissed by Dom Bess. It looks like England have surely wrapped this one up.

Pant goes, India 110 for five

Chennai: It was not a case of spinners doing all the damage on the fifth day pitch at the Chepauk Stadium here. James Anderson picked up his third wicket of the morning as India lost Rishabh Pant for 11. The wicketkeeper-batsman was caught by Joe Root at cover as India slipped to 110 for five. Looks like this match has gone out of India’s grasp.

India lose Rahane, slip to 92 for 4

Chennai: India’s fortunes continued to plummet with James Anderson clean bowling vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane for a duck. Rahane’s duration at the crease lasted for three balls only. India slipped to 92 for four with Rahane’s dismissal.

Gill departs after half century

Chennai: Shubman Gill (50) brought up his third Test half century, but fell soon after clean bowled by England pacer James Anderson. Skipper Virat Kohli (12 batting) and Ajinkya Rahane (zero batting) are at the crease with the team’s total standing at 92 for three.

India lose Pujara early

Chennai: Chasing a mammoth 420 runs to win the first Test against England, hosts India suffered a massive jolt Tuesday morning. They lost Cheteshwar Pujara (15) and the bowler to dismiss him was Jack Leach. It meant skipper Virat Kohli had to come out to bat early on. Giving him company is Shubman Gill who is on 26. However, if India are to win or save this game, both Kohli and Gill will have to bat for a substantial amount of time. Cheteshwar Pujara could only jab at a ball that bounced and spun on him. The ball caught the shoulder of the bat and Ben Stokes took a magnificent catch to his left in the slips.
