The body of 35-year-old Sumanta Mohanty was found stuffed inside the trunk of a Maruti car in a canal in Mancheswar area in Bhubaneswar October 10, 2008. When the body was recovered, it was found naked and full of deep cuts and wrapped in a bed sheet.

The police had then arrested Manas Ranjan Vedanta, Sushil Samantray, Sushil Jena and Subhakant Jena.

Commissioner of Police Soumendra Kumar Priyadarshi briefed journalists about the development at a press meet here Sunday.

Informing about the arrest, he said, “The Commissionerate Police has formed a special squad to arrest such criminals who have been absconding since committing crimes. Jena had absconded to Pune after the crime. Our special squad had been keeping a close watch on his movements. He had recently come to Odisha and the special squad arrested him from a location in Mancheswar area.”

According to the police, Manas and Sumanta were students of Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalay in 2001. One day, Sumanta objected to Manas passing lewd comments at girl students. Enraged at this, Manas attacked Sumanta with a knife.

Following this, Manas was arrested and simultaneously rusticated from the institution. He harboured a grudge against Sumanta as he held him responsible for spoiling his career.

By 2008 Sumanta had already earned a name as a music director in the Odia film industry. He had also scored music for Geeta Govinda, a project of a senior IAS officer.

On the fateful night, Manas asked Sumanta to meet him to discuss about a music album. The music director was taken to a house in Bomikhal area where he was murdered. After committing the crime, the miscreants wrapped his body in a bed sheet, placed it in the trunk of the deceased’s car, drove it up to Palasuni and from there pushed it into the canal.

Apart from the body, the police also recovered a dagger, a country-made pistol, two rings and a gold chain which the deceased was wearing and the deceased’s cell phone.
