Cuttack: Dreaded criminal Sheikh Babu was nabbed by Commissionerate Police after an exchange of fire near Barang-Chandaka road on the outskirts of Cuttack city late Thursday night. In the shootout, Babu sustained a bullet injury on his left leg while two police personnel were also injured.
The police had been looking out for Babu who has more than 20 cases of dacoity, loot and attempt to murder pending against him at different police stations in Odisha, officers said.
The police were tipped Thursday that Babu would travel on Barang-Chandaka road late in the evening. Subsequently, a team was formed and personnel lay in wait at a secluded place on the road in the night.
After a while, Babu was seen riding towards the trap laid for him on a motorcycle. The cops came out of the hiding and signalled him to stop. Seeing the cops, Babu jumped off his two-wheeler and tried to hide in the fields alongside the road. When the cops gave him chase, Babu allegedly opened fire at them.
Police also retaliated leading to Babu’s injury and his subsequent arrest. The police also seized a pistol and live bullets from his possession.
Babu is presently undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital here.
