Bhubaneswar: Milk procurement in the state during 2015-16 went up to 19,25,93,745 kg recording a growth of 22 per cent over the previous fiscal, said officials after a high-level committee meet presided over by Chief Secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi here Tuesday.
The officials said the average milk collection per day was 4, 44, 473 kg which has gone up to 5,23,710 kg in 2015-16. Milk output has also grown by six per cent during the 2014-15. The total milk production was 19,03,000 tonne against the production of 17,84,000 tonne during 2013-14.
“Artificial insemination in 2015-16 crossed a target of 15 lakh units. Around 10 lakh frozen semen doses are likely to be produced by end of this fiscal,” said a Fisheries and Animal Resources Development (F&ARD) department official, adding, “So far 628 infertility camps have been organised.”
Padhi directed the department to ensure 100 per cent veterinary service to live-stock farmers. The department has been advised to proactively provide vet services including appropriate animal feeding knowledge.
F&ARD secretary Bishnupada Sethi said there has been no epidemic in the past three years and the animal diseases have been under control. As many as 27 laboratories in the districts and three regional laboratories have been made operational to provide expert guidance for animal rearing and care. Around 1456 diary co-operative societies have also been provided with AI facilities.
OUAT professor Susant Das and member of the committee said Orissa is the first state to register cattle and buffalo species with National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resource ( NBAGR) after independence. So far, four cattle species— Kahariar, Ghumusari, Motou, Binjharpuri – and buffalo species Kalahandi buffalo and Chilika buffalo have been registered with the agency because of their unique indigenous genetic character.
The committee also discussed the priority areas of bovine breeding policy. The priority areas include establishment of embryo transfer technology laboratory, establishment of national bovine genomic centre, setting up of sex-sorted semen production technology, support for Goshala and early pregnancy diagnosis kit.
