Dharmasala/Kendrapara: In separate road mishaps, five persons including a child died while four others were critically injured in Jajpur and Kendrapara districts Friday.
A report from Dharmasala said five persons from Ganeshpur in West Bengal were travelling in an SUV to Bhubaneswar. However, the vehicle collided with a truck at Kumbharipata near Jaraka in the wee hours of Friday, leaving three dead and two critically injured.
The deceased were identified as Sukesh Sahu (45), his wife Pratima Sahu (40) and his friend Tapan Kanji (55) while Sukesh’s mother-in-law Bhanumati Sahu (60) and the driver were seriously wounded. The SUV was completely mangled. It is said the SUV driver was drowsing when the accident took place.
The family members were on their way to Bhubaneswar for the treatment of Pratima’s kidney disease.
Dharmasala police seized the vehicles and sent the bodies to Barchana CHC for post-mortem. The injured were admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.
Another accident took place on NH-200 near Dalagan under Jenapur police limits in Jajpur district, leaving one person dead. Ramesh Nayak, a truck helper of Bhutmundei in Kendrapara, was killed when another truck hit him while he was dismantling a punctured wheel of his truck. Jenapur police seized the trucks and sent the body to Barchana CHC for post-mortem.
In yet another accident, Lochan Das of Uttarala under Salepur police limits was critically injured when he and his son were crossing NH-5 at Kuakhia after purchasing vegetables. A bike hit Lochan, leaving him critically wounded. He was admitted to Dharmasala CHC and later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital.
Meanwhile, a report from Kendrapara said a child was killed and his father sustained serious injuries when a truck hit their bicycle at Maladiha on Jamboo-Marshaghai canal road under Mahakalapara police limits Friday.
According to Mahakalapara IIC Padarbinda Tripathy, Bhima Swain and his three-year-old son, Pabitra Swain, were returning to their house on a bicycle when a speeding truck hit them.
The child died on the spot while Bhima sustained critical injuries and was rushed to the district headquarters hospital. Later, he was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital.
Angry locals staged a blockade on Jamboo-Marshaghai canal road demanding compensation to the bereaved family and free medical treatment to the injured.
A police team led by the IIC along with local executive magistrate rushed to the spot and pacified the agitators.
The administration provided Rs 20,000 from the district Red Cross fund and assured the agitators that the administration would write to the state government to provide compensation from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
Traffic was paralysed on the busy road for a couple of hours due to the blockade. PNN
