Bhubaneswar, April 18: On the occasion of World heritage day, many events were organised by the state culture department and other organisations in the city, Monday.
Early in the morning, the state culture and tourism department organised a heritage walk around the famous historical monuments which started from Rajarani Temple at Old Town at around 7.30 am.
Scores of students who participated in the rally held placards and shouted slogans, while folk artistes displayed different cultural activities throughout the rally.
The rally was attended by culture and tourism minister Ashok Kumar Panda, culture secretary Manoranjan Panigrahi, mayor Ananta Narayan Jena, Bhubaneswar MLAs Priyadarshi Mishra and Vijay Mohanty as well as other dignitaries.
To mark the day, a two-day photo exhibition titled ‘Unearthing Orissa’a Past – A Glimpse of Archeological Excavations in Orissa’ started at the PG Council Hall of Utkal University. The exhibition was inaugurated by the university’s vice-chancellor AK Das.
The exhibition is being organised by the PG department of ancient Indian history, culture and archeology in collaboration with the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) and OIMSEAS.
At the exhibition are displayed more than 100 pictures of different excavated sites, which include pictures before the excavations were carried out and conditions of the site after the excavations.
“We organised this exhibition for students, scholars and intellectuals who are keen to discover the heritage of the state which archeological spadework brings to light,” said Sanjay Acharya, head of the department of ancient history at Utkal University.
The photo exhibition highlights some of the major excavations carried out by the ASI in the state in the last 50 years. Kuchai (in Mayurbhanj district), Ratnagiri, Udayagiri, Lalitgiri, Khalkatapatana and Suabarei are some of the noteworthy sites that have been excavated.
This apart, the pictures of some of the excavations conducted by the state archeology department and OIMSEAS are also exhibited. These include popular sites like Manikpatana, Langudi, Radhanaga and Aragada.
