Paralakhemundi, July 12: Dogs are the most loyal of the lot among animals, a belief that was proved Tuesday at Sebakpur village of Rayagada block in Gajapati district.
In an unusual incident, a Doberman saved the lives of eight members of Dibakar Raita’s family by mauling to death four cobras. However, in the end it lost its life for the safety of its masters.
Sebakpur village is located on a foothill surrounded by wild shrubs. Often poisonous snakes and wild animals sneak into the houses and cowsheds of villagers. Dibakar, a resident of the village, brought the pet a few months ago for the safety of his family. Like every night, the dog was guarding the house at the front door Monday night.
Meanwhile, four adult cobras tried to slither inside the house. However, the alert and faithful animal confronted the four reptiles and didn’t allow them in. It fought violently and finished the snakes. However, the dog too succumbed since it had been bitten by the snakes during the fight.
Hundreds of people of nearby areas rushed to the village as the news spread. While a pal of gloom descended on the village, Dibakar’s family performed the last rites of the dog like one of his family members with teary eyes.
