Delang, August 7: A 45-year-old woman’s refusal to pay money to her 29-year-old alcoholic son to buy liquor enraged him so much that he attacked her with a sword, killing her on the spot.
The shocking incident took place at Gajapatna village in Munida gram panchayat under Delang police limits Sunday morning. The accused, Prashant Behera, hacked his mother, Sanjukta, to death, said police. Police registered a murder case against Prashant on the basis of a complaint lodged by his father, Rabindra Behera, 53.
Prashant, who tried to run away after the crime, was arrested by a team of policemen led by Delang police station inspector-in-charge Debasish Mishra from Jagdalpur level-crossing. Police officials and a forensic science team later visited the murder spot and recovered the sword used for the murder.
Rabindra Behera was working in his farmland when the incident happened. In fact, minutes before the murder, Prashant had told Rabindra that he needed a sword for some work, and an unsuspecting Rabindra had told him where it was kept in their house, said sources.
When Rabindra came back some time later, he was shocked to see his wife lying on the floor of the house in a pool of blood as Prashant stood beside the body holding the bloodstained sword.
When Rabindra raised an alarm and called the neighbours, Prashant ran away.
Sources said Prashant used to harass his mother asking for money to buy alcohol. Once, when his mother had refused to give him money for liquor, he had cut one of his fingers.
Since then Sanjukta used to give him money to buy alcohol without informing her husband, added the sources.
