New Delhi: Union Law and Justice Minister Kiren Rijiju said Tuesday he hasn’t received any formal confirmation from Odisha government regarding Orissa High Court Chief Justice S Muralidhar’s nod for setting up of a bench of the court in the western Odisha. Responding to the apprehensions raised by MPs during the discussion on the Family Court (Amendment) Bill, 2022 in the Lok Sabha, the law minister informed that there is an established system in practice and he cannot make any statement without the consent of the Chief Justice of Orissa High Court.
“There is a proposal from the state government. The proposal has to be sent to Chief Justice of the High Court for consent. The Odisha government or the Chief Justice of Orissa High Court has to inform me that the Chief Justice has agreed for setting up a bench in western Odisha,” the Union Law Minister said.

Earlier, BJP MP Suresh Pujari has asked Rijiju about the present status of the proposal for setting up of a high court bench in western Odisha. Pujari said Rijiju is the fourth Law Minister who has written to the state government and Chief Justice of Orissa HC on the issue.
“But, none of them received any response in this regard from the state government and the Odisha High Court,” Pujari claimed. He also urged the Union Minister to take up the matter once again with the Odisha government.
It is worth mentioning here that the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) supported the the Family Court (Amendment) Bill, 2022.
