Bhubaneswar: Biju Chhatra Janata Dal (BCJD), the student wing of ruling Biju Janata Dal, emerged victorious in the students union elections, the results of which were announced Wednesday, in several colleges across state.
BCJD’s Mahesh Prasad was elected the president and his party colleague Ipsita Sahoo became the general secretary of Utkal University students union.
In Rama Devi Women’s university, independent candidate Anasuya Tripathy won the presidential poll defeating arch rival Chinmayee Jena of BCJD. Sangita Panda, another independent, was elected general secretary without a contest. After the elections Anasuya said her main objective is to ensure provision of basic facilities like water in the hostels. Tanmayee Hota, who had supported Tripathy after her nomination was rejected, said she and her supporters worked very hard for the victory. “It’s a victory of truth”, she said.
Mahesh Prasad thanked his fellow students for supporting him and said he will try to keep all the promises he had made during the campaign. Swagatika Mohanty (BCJD) won the presidential post in University Law College.
At least 10 colleges including BJB College in the city had cancelled elections due to campus violence. They are Ekamra College, Basic Science College and City Women’s College in Bhubaneswar, Simulia College, Balasore, Nimapara College, Puri, Govt Autonomous College, Angul, Sadhu Goudeswar College, Jajpur, Upendranath College, Soro and Gopalpur College, Soro.
