Bhubaneswar: Orissa athletes bagged a gold and a bronze medal Friday, the second day of the 32nd National Junior Athletics Championship currently on at Coimbatore.
Punga Soren won the first gold medal for the state in boys’ U-16 100 metres hurdles with a time of 13.76 seconds. The silver medal went to Babu Sona (13.81s) of West Bengal while VK Muhammad Lazan (13.94s) of Kerala bagged the bronze.
Rout Singh clinched a bronze medal in the boys’ U-14 triathlon with 1,638 points. Salman Khan(1,674 points) of Maharashtra and Ajay Sharma (1,650 points) of Haryana won gold and silver medals respectively.
BBL starts
In a major boost for the state shuttlers, Bhubaneswar Badminton League (BBL), organised by KC Memorial Trust, was inaugurated by Olympian and Rajya Sabha MP Dilip Tirkey at the Sahid Nagar Indoor Hall here Friday.
Altogether eight franchises—Manchewar Night Riders, Fusion Fighters, Mythi Warriors, S3 Shuttlers, Kiora Feathers, Bros Winners, Safe Smashers and Essen Challengers are taking part in this competition. The tournament will continue till November 13.
The winner of BBL will get a cash award of `40,000, while the runners-up will take home `25,000.
Football tourney
Bhubaneswar Athletic Association (BCA) will organise the 13th Gatikrushna Memorial Bhubaneswar A Division Football League at the Unit-I Boys’ High School Ground here November 12-26. Altogether eight teams divided into two groups will participate in the event to be played in the league-cum-knockout format.

Orissa Cricket Association (OCA) announced a 16-member team for the BCCI U-19 Women’s East Zone ODI League to be played at Cuttack, November 12-20. Sangita Khadia has been appointed as the skipper of the team.

Three players from Orissa have been selected to the senior Indian women’s hockey team for the five Test matches against the Australian eves, to be played between November 14-28 at Perth and Melbourne. They are Deep Grace Ekka, Sunita Lakra and Rashmita Minz.
