Joda: Two rare species of snakes which are on the verge of extinction have been rescued Sunday from Joda in Keonjhar district.
One of snakes identified as Ornate Flying Snake was rescued at Bhuyan slum in Joda town. This species of snake is known for its bright colour and morphology. It is not venomous, state’s known snake catcher Chandan Mohanty told this correspondent.
This snake can easily fly from one branch of a tree to another, which is why it is known as Ornate Flying Snake, Mohanty said. It defies logic by being able to glide through the air from tree to tree.
Similarly, another rare snake species Bamboo Pit Viper was rescued from Kamar Joda area. It is green in colour and is poisonous, Mohanty said. The two snakes after their rescue were released in the nearby jungle.
Mohanty said that people should not kill snakes out of fear and call the forest personnel or authorised snake catchers to catch the reptiles. The snakes come out due to high moisture content during the rainy season, he added.
