Bhubaneswar, Jan 16: Orissa’s rich Buddhist heritage was on display at a photo exhibition jointly organised by the Public Trust of India and the tourism department in order to give a fillip to the state government’s efforts to highlight the state as a place where Buddhism flourished and spread to other parts of the world.
Visitors to the event were fascinated by pictures of ancient monasteries and aerial views of excavations of Buddhist sites such as Dhauli, Purusottampur, Lalitgiri, Dharamsala, Langudi and Radhanagar.
Health minister Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak, who inaugurated the event, said the exhibition would have a positive impact on the state’s tourism sector. “The event will have a positive impact on the tourism sector of the state which has a rich history of culture, art and sculpture. Several lesser-known Buddhist sites will also get exposure through this event. Our knowledge of our state widens through such events due to the research of many intellectuals,” said Atanu, who inaugurated the event in the presence of energy department additional secretary Sangramjit Nayak and Om Prakash, editor of Public Trust of India.
“Through such events, more people of our state will get to know what a glorious history we possess. Most people usually get to see only a few of these beautiful sites, and such events help build awareness for the lesser-known sites,” said Om Prakash.
Officials said the event will be a three-day affair and will culminate Sunday.
