Cuttack: The Commissionerate police may soon approach the Orissa State Road Transport Corporation (OSRTC) for installation CCTV cameras at Badambadi bus stand to keep tabs on anti-social elements. This was revealed at a meeting of the traffic management committee held here recently.
According to sources, the Commissionerate police has suggested installation of at least 20 CCTV cameras at Badambadi main bus stand for the safety of passengers.
“Incidents of snatching, theft and pick-pocketing are regularly reported from the busy bus stand area. Installation of CCTVs is the best option to tackle such crimes. Police commissioner YB Khurania will write to the managing director of OSRTC in this regard,” said a top police officer of the Commissionerate police.
Sources said the police have asked the roads and buildings (R&B) department to install signboards at accident-prone spots in the city to create awareness among motorists. The R&B department has also been urged to erect speed breakers at some places to check rash driving.
Police officials have asked water resources department to expedite a bridge project on Taladanda canal in Ranihaat area to ease traffic congestion. They have also urged the authorities concerned to speed up works of a drainage project being constructed with financial assistance from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
“The Commissionerate police in collaboration with the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) has constituted a committee to check unauthorised digging of city roads for erection of bamboo gates during the festivities and for other purposes. No individual or organisation is allowed to dig the roads without prior approval of the panel,” said the official.
Police officials have asked the CMC authorities to identify encroachments on city roads and take steps to remove them. Sources said CMC commissioner Gyana Das has agreed to launch an eviction drive to demolish illegal constructions on city roads. PNN
