Pipli: A petition was filed in the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) over alleged murder of a migrant labourer in Tamil Nadu recently.
Rights activist Akhand has filed the petition with the NHRC alleging that Kailash Behera, a resident of Kamalasagarpatna under Pipli police limits, had been murdered in the southern state.
Sources said Kailash, a Dalit, along with some other youths of the village, with the help of a middleman, had gone to Tamil Nadu to work as labourers two years ago. He was working with a carton manufacturing company.
Kailash had spoken to his family members January 22 afternoon. However, the family members received a call from a co-worker in the evening regarding his murder near a market under Red Hills police limits in Tiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu.
The police are yet to nab the culprits though a week has elapsed to the incident. This is in violation of human rights, alleged Akhand in his petition.
Akhand further stated that youths are migrating to other states due to lack of employment opportunities in Orissa. Though they are subjected to harassment by their employers in other states, the labour department remains a mute spectator, he added.
Kailash was the sole breadwinner of his family. Moreover, his father is a tuberculosis patient and the family is in utter distress after losing him, the petitioner stated.
The petitioner requested the commission to direct the Orissa and Tamil Nadu governments to provide Rs 8 lakh compensation to the deceased’s family. He also demanded immediate arrest of the culprits. PNN
